Tuesday 3rd July 2007

Littlehampton 109-8     Worthing 115-7

The Sportsmen was the venue for Sunday’s rescheduled match against Littlehampton on Tuesday night.

Showers were forecast and so it proved to be – in fact one shower lasted about an hour!

Littlehampton bowled first on a very slow, damp wicket.

James Meachin and Adam Stephens opened with Adam running himself out in the first over – an uncharacteristic mistake.  James Ballamy was next in and was bowled from an unplayable delivery for one run.  This was where the Team showed their great spirit, Alex Williams came in and knocked a hard-earned 13.  Richard Campkin played up the order for the first time and dug in and scored a superb 26* before James Meachin was caught for 17.  Ryan Quirke (9) and Will Smithers (3) stayed put for while allowing Richard to continue the scoring.

After a break for rain we managed to score 115-7.

Richard Campkin then opened the bowling with Jack Stuart; both giving little away and taking a wicket apiece.  The opposition were keeping up with the run rate and Tom Chambers was as reliable as ever and kept the pressure on.  Enter – James Ballamy; after dropping a difficult chance he was not happy but he then bowled the best I have seen him this season to take a couple of wickets.  Alex Williams came on with Ryan Quirke and took a wicket each; pushing the rate required up.

James Ballamy came back for the last over with 11 required to win; first ball 4 runs and the next ball a wicket.   In the last four balls James took another wicket to end with figures of 4-17 and leaving Littlehampton six runs short of our total – a real nail-biter and a superb team performance.

Five out of five now so, as our Director of Youth Development says, “wait until the rest of the scores are in”.

Thanks to George Stephens for umpiring and to Steve Townend for scoring and again great support from all the parents.

Well done boys and thank you all.

Sunday 17th June 2007

Worthing Chips 29 all out (16.3 overs) Worthing 168-4 25 overs

A very bleak and wet start to Father’s Day put the start of this game in doubt but the sun soon came out for a 9.30am start.  Chips won the toss and fielded first.

Captain Ballamy (25*) opened with James Meachin (25*); both batted superbly and duly retired – Ballamy hitting four boundaries despite giving the opposition a couple of catching chances.  Adam Stephens (27*) stroked 4 fours on the way to a beautifully crafted retirement.

Adam Bardouleau (27*) played solidly and supported by Joe Isaacs (16*) we notched up 168 runs.

Despite the large total to defend our fielding was excellent; Jack Tracey, playing his first game for the under 14’s, was solid.

Our bowling attack was hostile as usual and a replacement bale was called for after Richard Campkin smashed one.  James Ballamy captained well and used six bowlers.  Adam Bardouleau taking three great catches and Joe Isaacs taking a wonderful diving catch dismissing the opponents for 29 all out.

Bowlers figures were:-

Richard Campkin            2-4

Tom Chambers               2-6

James Ballamy                 1-4

Michelle Payne                1-7

William Smithers             2-2

Alex Williams                  0-2

An excellent performance boys – thanks for your efforts.

Once again thanks to Paul Chambers for umpiring and to Steve Townend for scoring.

Eastergate v Worthing (Thursday 31st May 2007)

Eastergate 69-8     Worthing 121-6

Sunday’s match was cancelled and this re-arranged fixture took place at 5.30pm on a glorious Thursday evening.

Worthing won the toss and decided to bat.

James Meachin (5) and Adam Stephens (16) opened and played very solidly on an extremely soft wicket with the ball going through really low but occasionally kicking up.

James Ballamy 26* retired, again managing to hit five boundaries.

Alex Williams 25* and Will Smithers (12) pushed the score on nicely with Tom Chambers (10*) partnering the rest to reach a creditable 121-6.

The bowling attack was ferocious with some unplayable deliveries:

J Stuart 2-8

R Campkin 2-8

J Ballamy 2-11

W Smithers 1-7

Michelle Payne 1-11

Our fielding was excellent; Joe Isaacs having another good session with the gloves.

The Team spirit was superb and with Ballamy at the helm this Team are a credit to themselves.

Eastergate’s scorer commented after the match that Worthing’s boys had conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and were a credit to the Club.

Thanks – keep it up.

Worthing v Bosham (Monday 7th May 2007)

Worthing 145-7   Bosham 85 all out

After a rain delayed start Bosham won the toss and elected to field.

Openers James Meachin and Joe Isaacs battled against the wind with

James Meachin making 22 before being caught.

Captain James Ballamy again made a very competent 25* with Alex Williams coming in at number 6 to score a creditable 25*.  Well supported by the rest of the Team to score 145-7.

The bowling attack was slightly more wayward this week giving away quite a few extras, a strong South-Westerly wind didn’t help but Jack Stuart and

Richard Campkin were at times unplayable taking a wicket a piece.

Tom Chambers, again superb, took 3-19.  James Ballamy with some very pacy balls took 2-17.  He then elected to bring on Ryan Quirke and Will Smithers.  Ryan quickly had a wicket with two very accurate overs.   Will Smithers then took 2-5 with two overs of well-flighted spin.

Again the fielding was superb, only a few chances put down but the backing up and throws into the keeper (another excellent game Joe) were excellent.

Great Team spirit boys – well done!

Again, thanks to Paul Chambers for umpiring and to Steve Townend for scoring.

Worthing v Selsey (Sunday 29th April 2007)

Worthing 142-7   Selsey 59 all out

We welcomed Selsey on a beautiful Sunday morning, fielding seven Under 13’s in this Under 14’s game.

The openers did what was asked of them seeing off the new ball allowing

James Ballamy to score a lightening 25 before being retired.  Adam Stephens hit a very steady 28, also retired.  Debutant, Alex Williams 20* closed the innings with able assistance from the remainder of the Team to notch up 142-7.

Our bowlers were superb, bowling very straight and only giving away four extras:

Richard Campkin 3-23

Jack Stuart 2-24

Alex Williams 2-0

Tom Chambers 2-5

Our fielders were excellent, the backing up was encouraging and Tom Chambers had a magnificent run-out with a direct hit from the covers.

Joe Isaacs had a great match keeping wicket as he had some quick stuff to deal with.

Catching could have been better in the field – something to work on!

As this is their first game as a Team the support they gave each other was excellent and a great Team spirit was evident.

Thanks to Steve and Paul for scoring and umpiring and to all the parents for their support.

Well done lads – an encouraging start to the Season!

James.
